Supernatural Gen Drabble: Second Chances
Title: Second Chances
Author: HalfshellVenus
Character: Sam (Gen)
Rating: PG
Summary: Sam wants a miracle.
Author's Notes: Set early Season 2, this is for the 100_ghosts "resurrection" challenge.

x-x-x-x-x

Sam wants a miracle.

He's afraid to think it—to admit it's that hopeless. He's afraid he might have had just one miracle where Dean's concerned, already used up earlier this year. Surely there was a reason Dean came back, beyond a few extra pain-filled months?

Dean hasn't moved since the accident, and Sam grows desperate the longer that goes on. He'd do anything to bring his brother back, anything.

Still, he's shocked when Dean actually wakes up.

When they lose Dad hours later, Sam turns guilt-stricken-cold.

He'd still give that 'anything' again… God help him, he knows he would.

Thank you! So many possibilities with "resurrection," but this one seemed less obvious and still true. :)

Oh, yes-- not only a terrible choice to make, but maybe even worse to know that you could make it. *wibble*

Ouch. That whole bunch of episodes was one pain-filled mess. I really like how you've pointed out the connections between the miracles and Sam will to do anything to get his brother back.

Nice little fic.

Thanks for writing and sharing.

Thank you, Nutty. :)

Oh, those episodes hurt. The aftermath was nearly as bad as the instigation. :( Especially when you remember the rawness of both their pain, and the fact that Dean pushed Sam away so hard afterward that it was like he lost them both for awhile. No way for him to know that Dean was feeling his own kind of guilt, on top of the dread caused by the secret their Dad spilled to him.

I still ... honestly believe this. It would tear him to shreds, but this is what he would choose as well.
The Coalition For Disturbing Metaphors: Samhalfshellvenus on April 16th, 2007 03:45 pm (UTC)
I agree completely-- and how would you feel about yourself, knowing that you would make that choice if you had to? *wibbles*

The things they will kill for family... The family they'd sacrifice for each other. Those boys are just ...

I have soup for them.

The family they'd sacrifice for each other.
Love how you put that, and oh-- how it hurts!

Guilt-ridden!Sam. *Forgives Sam's 'anything' thoughts* It's nooooot his fault!
The Coalition For Disturbing Metaphors: Samhalfshellvenus on April 16th, 2007 03:48 pm (UTC)
Oh, I know-- it isn't is fault.

But even though Sam might have suspected what his father was up to (he brought John the ingredients for that spell, and he may have guessed what they were for), some part of him has to wonder... He let John do it, and if he had to choose directly, he'd still have picked Dean. :(

brilliant idea that gave me shivers.

Thank you, missyjack!

And oh how I think knowing that about yourself-- that if you invited that choice, you'd be able to make it-- would be hard to live with afterward.

Can you imagine?

I think what Dean doesn't understand, in the midst of his own personal guilt about coming back and John going in his place, is that Sam has his own different guilt about that whole situation. How Sam must wonder if he had a hand in either his father's choice, or simply in the outcome. *angsts*

This fic is just so right! Sam wouldn't change it, and he would make the same choice, feel guilty about it, but make all the same and not regret anything that ment that Dean was ok.

Poor Sam

Exactly! He would hate himself for making the only choice his heart could allow him to make, and he hates knowing that he would choose that.

And it was written all over his face, in his eyes each time he looked at Dean.
So much desperation there, and Dean remained frozen and unresponsive, with no sign of ever coming back (we know he wasn't actually supposed to).

I can't blame Sam at all-- and to have Dean survive Demon!John, only to be hit by a truck (Sam probably didn't know who was driving it) is more unfairness than one man should have to live with. :(

Nice, hon. I think Sam would have wished to save Dean, and felt guilty at the cost (and even more guilty because I think he knows he'd pick Dean every time.)

Oh, I agree-- it's not just that he would have given absolutely-desperate-anything. It's knowing that once he saw what the price was (in his mind), it burned like a sonofabitch and he'd still do it again knowing now what the price actually was. Ouch!

I agree
he may feel guilty but he'd do both again even knowing what he knows now. Loved it.

And that's the toughest part. He would, even knowing the exact price. He'd choose it again. *wibble*

Aww, that must've been a tough time for Sammy. :(

Nice take on your prompt.

Nice take on your prompt.
Thank you! That seemed a perfect moment-- an actual sort of "resurrection" (only the viewer knows how completely true that really is), and the angst for Sam of knowing that he'd choose that outcome all over again if he had to, even knowing what it was. :(
