Supernatural Gen Drabble: Stasis
Title: Stasis
Author: HalfshellVenus
Characters: Sam and Dean (Gen)
Rating: PG
Summary: Sam's still here…
Author's Notes: Season 2 drabble for the "Gift Horse" challenge at 100_ghosts.

x-x-x-x-x

Sam's still here.

Even after a year, it's a surprise to Dean each time he wakes up and it's still true.

Sam says he's here by choice now, that this is his life. He plans to hunt down the Demon that took everything from them— first Mom, then Dad, and always, always Jess.

The demon wants their future as well, and Dean doesn't forget that whenever Sam leaves his sight.

Whether Sam really wants this or is too angry to turn away, he no longer talks about leaving.

Dean reminds himself every day not to question that choice too much.

I wish Sam wanted to stay just for Dean alone, but if not... I'm grateful on Dean's behalf that there's a reason for Sam to be there after all. :)

Thank you, moondropz. :)

Your icon... I tell you, that was the single most unsexy moment Dean has had on the show yet. It kind of weirded me out (gorilla!Boy that he is there). :0

I enjoyed it ;-) Thanks for sharing!
And lol! Choco-cheeked Dean never fails to amuse me. The man can be 10 kinds of hot-then do something like this and I crack up laughing! I cannot watch this scene without dying laughing! ;-P It's too much! ;-D

i think it will take a long time for dean to stop questioning sam's choice to stay, and to stop thinking that sam's going to leave again. my favorite line tho is The demon wants their future as well, and Dean doesn't forget that whenever Sam leaves his sight because dean is always, always going to worry when he and sam are separated.

Oh, me too. Sam was so very clear about not wanting to stay (right in the face of Dean's heartbreak) that I wouldn't be able to ever stop waiting for the other shoe to drop in Dean's shoes now.

because dean is always, always going to worry when he and sam are separated.
Oh, even recently, Sam ran off for a day or so to chase Ava (and Dean was beside himself), followed by being gone for a week because the Demon actually had ahold of him. It's hard to stop worrying when your fears have been justified!

Oh boys...

That was awesome. Short, but soooo true!

Very well written.

Do you mean my link over there on the right, that lets you try out HTML and see what the result is? That has been incredibly useful for me. I learned all my HTML on-the-fly after starting up at LiveJournal, and those "what it does, now try it out" examples have been a godsend. :)

Yay! Learning by doing or should I say trying?... *gg*

Thank you!

Real drabbles are just 100 words, which is not much, but sometimes you can get a complete idea in there.

It's like a bite-sized piece of angst. :)

That last line is the whole prompt in a nutshell, where it all comes together.

He has what he thought he wanted now, and even looking at it too hard could change it.

I'd be just as afraid in his shoes. :(

I think you quite possibly broke me with that - poor, poor Dean.

Sometimes, in all abstraction and honesty... I think Dean has spent his entire life after the age of four just waiting for the other shoe to drop. *sniffles*

the repetition of "always" puts across the jealousy in dean's heart.
:D I so love that you noticed that little detail, and what it means-- Jess wasn't his, and those other losses have to seem more important to him. And some part of Sam should want to stay for Dean alone, but Sam has never said that-- he's promised instead that it's not enough.

also, you convey dean's big brother worry in the fourth line and it makes me squee.
I mentioned it in some of the comments above, but the worry is worse when it is not only justified but has already been validated! The Demon stealing Sam and taking him over for a week is exactly the kind of thing Dean's so afraid of.

alas, in the end he has to settle for the fact that sam is just there, and that the reason doesn't have to matter.
And that looking too hard at the reason could change it, and Sam would leave all over again.

*Sigh* Always waiting and watching out for Sam, and never resting easy. :(

In a way it's so true and so sad and so.... I don't know...just perfect! :)

I do know what you mean-- this is the place Dean can't leave, not since Sam went to college and then came back again. He can't ever really trust that situation not to change. :(

Oh, this was just beautiful. So much said in so few words. I love the fear and insecurity that comes through Dean's voice here; it's heartbreaking.

That's it exactly, and it hurts so much that Dean has been shown and told by Sam that he's not enough to stay for-- and he's already seen Sam get taken by the Demon once already.

All he can do is cling onto the moment, and hope he doesn't scare Sam away by saying or doing the wrong thing. :(

And this, Always losing even when he's winning... is so very much Dean. *sigh*

Or, in other words, great job with the prompt. :)

Hee! Thank you!

This drabble expresses the "Don't look a gift horse in the mouth" really clearly to me. And for Dean, this is probably #1 on the list of gift horses about which that should be said. *wibbles*

I haven't watched this season at all but when I read your work.
It makes me want to watch.

Dean. sigh! No Words.
The Coalition For Disturbing Metaphors: Diner Deanhalfshellvenus on March 1st, 2007 04:08 am (UTC)
Oh, Tyrical, no Season 2? It's been such a roller-coaster, but so very worth it. Hope you'll get a chance to catch up.

Dean. sigh! No Words.
This part of his life just hasn't changed at all. He's still the person everyone leaves, like it doesn't even matter when in fact it's the only thing he really cares about. :(
