Dreads I Am Dreading...
One of these is already underway—we're hosting one of the all night video-game extravaganzas our son and his friends like to have. Six teenage boys, boatloads of junk food, and mainly... mayhem in the house for some 19-20 hours. AUGHHHH!

For introverts, like HalfshellHusband and me, this kind of frenzy is basically a version of Hell.

Dread #2 is next weekend's drive to San Diego to pick up the oldest from college. She has to be out by noon on Saturday, and mentioned a week ago that I might want to leave on Thursday instead of Friday. Then I talked to her this Wednesday: "No! Don't come on Friday! I'll be saying goodbye to all my friends, I don't want you here! I will not see you before Saturday." Then she announced her new plan, which was for me to show up at 6 am (I'm not even AWAKE until about 8 am) and pack up the car so we can leave before that noon cutoff. After driving for 9-11 hours the previous day (depending on how traffic goes). I told her she needed to rethink that. And that I am not her sherpa. ;) She's so considerate of her friends, and then there's this kind of behavior with her own family: I don't want to see you but let me make some major new demands.

And she wonders why I call her on that kind of self-entitled behavior. :O

Dread #3 is the weekend afterward. God, what a summer this will be. The good news is that HalfshellHusband is getting a new hip! He's a couple of months overdue now, pain-wise, but he wanted to schedule it for when school got out so the kids would be around to help. The bad news is the two months or so of rehab and all the time he'll be stuck in bed (except for his trips outside to practice walking). We can't really go anywhere as a family this summer, and we couldn't do anything earlier because he was in too much pain. Needless to say, it'll be a long, unpleasant time for him, and I'm feeling stressed out and trapped in anticipation of it all (and in the extra work that is looming) :(

He's a little worried about the pain management plan afterwards, BUT, if this goes the way the previous hip replacement did... the loss of pain from the arthritis itself will dwarf the residual effect from the surgery. It has been that bad.

All right, back to the insanity. I'm not sure my ear plugs are going to cut it tonight. :O

*Huggles* Best of wishes to you both, hope the hip op/recovery goes okay.

Thank you! It seems like the pain is increasing the closer we get, so it'll be a huge relief when that's gone.

These dreads, K! *hugs*

I'm sorry G is in so much pain. The surgery will help and I hope his recovery is rapid and that he can bear the pain. I empathize hugely. Too bad he's not more of a TV guy.

Your daughter is being age-appropriately selfish. She will outgrow this! That is such a HUGE drive. I hope you have some good audio!

He has such a huge tolerance for pain, and he's very stoic. So, what he's going through now is really bad. Basically, chronic pain until the new hip is in, and the pain killers aren't doing much of anything for him. Maybe because the joint has no cartilage, on top of the arthritis itself.

Our daughter already revised her plan to moving out on Friday again, once the announcement came down that the campus will be flooded with people arriving for graduation on Saturday. As in, be out or you'll be sorry! Which certainly works out better for me. ;)

The audio problem, though... not solved. I spent more than two hours last weekend downloading iTunes and trying to figure that out so I could update my podfics, if nothing else. It turns out that this version of iTunes doesn't seem to let you edit or update anything (in which case, WHY would I ever buy new songs from it?). I uninstalled it, but now can't install an earlier version that has actual features.

This seriously makes me wish I had not given away my old walkman! I may be bringing a mini boom-box along, just in case...

Walkman makes surprisingly good mp3 players. You just drag and drop your mp3s into the music file--no irritating iCrap involved.

Hooray for new hip! :) Boo for long recovery times. :(

I bought an MP3 player (someone's) for HSH a couple of Christmases ago. I may need to borrow it for this trip, because damn.

Oh, these are serious dreads. Most especially the third. My very best wishes to halfshellhusband. Do the boys clean up after marathon gaming? Sorry about the college thing. Your the Mom, it's your car. 😁

It will be so nice to have that surgery over with. The first two weeks afterward are especially hard (SO boring for him), but the pain will be a lot less. Fortunately, there is a TV in the bedroom. And he's planning to swipe one of the cable boxes for awhile.

The boys did a great job cleaning up after themselves. They're a nice bunch of kids-- it was a pleasant surprise!

So great the boys cleaned up after themselves!

I will be sending speedy recovery thoughts and wishes rayaso's way.

Hahahaha! Only fun for the participants. Loud and exhausting for everyone else. But they had a great time. :)

You are an amazing mom!

I'm happy relief is on the way for HSH. I hope the rehab-and-rest period is as easy as possible, for all of you. <3

Aw, thank you!

HSH is hanging in there, but also getting to the point where he has maybe 2-4 hours of sleep a night, so getting rid of that pain will make such a difference.

A 9-11 hour long drive? Wow!

Good luck and best wishes to HalfshellHusband!

A coworker was just saying, "That's nothing! I made a drive to Portland that long just days ago."

Well yes, so have I. Many times. And the drive to the south part of the state is very different from driving north! It has hours worth of "nothing" in the middle, and nothing but country radio. Plus, I drove it the other way last September, and reached the "slapping-myself-in-the-face, desperately-drinking-horrible-5-hour-energy-goo" a couple of times in that middle "nothing." My daughter does half the driving when she's in the car, but one of the directions is always alone! And when you get sleepy, you really notice. :O

Thanks for the good wishes for HalfshellHusband. We're about 10 days out from that surgery now, and it will be such a relief to have so much less pain.
