Faster, faster!
Helicopters are circling the neighborhood, and yet I'm too distracted by trying to sign up for Yuletide to even wonder why.

Oh, Yuletide. I always seem to miss the window for submitting fandoms, and then when I go to see what's available to request/offer, it's this discombobulating experience of "Huh?" There are a lot of comics/graphic-novels/anime fandoms, most of which I don't know but which would be confounding to me anyway. Writing fanfic for an animated medium just glitches for me. If I've seen a film version with actors, it's possible, but otherwise... *brainlock* There are TV shows I don't watch, books I've never read or didn't like (hi, Susan Cooper!), and other puzzling things. Though I'm pretty sure I have these same thoughts every year. :D

Mainly, it's the pressure of, "But could I write a minimum-thousand-word story for this?" Because we all know my micro-ficcing tendencies. OTOH, I see that "Cities, Anthropomorphic" is a category, and I actually wrote something for that last year as an extra treat. Still... probably a fluke.

Bayern Munich RPF is on the list, and that rings a bell because it's the soccer team my daughter has gone nuts over (verified via Google, because how many teams have a player named Schweinsteiger ("pig overseer," or pig farmer))?

Nonetheless, I _will_ find something. And you should, too. Only two days left, and that's probably on European time!

This is the first year I've actually been paying attention in time to sign up -- and I'm so excited I could choke! There are only a handful of fandoms I've comfortable writing, but a handful is enough for a sign up (thank god). I had more trouble with the request side -- I tend towards tunnel vision, so meeting the three-request minimum actually took some extra brainpower.

So thrilling! Can it be assignment time yet? :D

(p.s. good luck! You can totally do it!)

I'm starting to accumulate some "maybes" in the offerings, but have to go back and check the other tags. For instance, last year's "Die Hard 4" category did not have John McClane as a requestable character! Something else was similar-- the main character was not one of the choices. And is "The Hidden" that alien/cop buddy movie with Kyle MacLachlan? Well, more to the point... could I write something for that? :D

The request side is harder for me, in that I typically want slash (but not kinky slash, or OOC slash, or where the characters are girly), and that often doesn't turn out well. Or I get confounded by, "Yes! Love the fandom! But I was satisfied with the original/I have no idea what I'd write for it, so what would I ask for?"

Thanks goodness your previous signups are available from prior years-- I wind up looking to see what I asked for before, so I can request it again. ;)

My favorite part is usually the random, unplanned stuff I write as Yuletide Madness treats. Cities anthropomorphic, Harvard/MIT slash, Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock poetry, etc.

I'm glad you're getting to do it this year-- I think you'l have fun. :D

Ahah, yeah, the selection of characters can be a little arbitrary. I'm guessing that's because certain main characters don't qualify under the "small fandom" requirements, or something to that effect? There were a couple fandoms I didn't put on my offers list in the end, because I wasn't as confident about the characters that were available.

It's legit been over two years since I did any kind of fic exchange, because of timing things or just plain not being as involved in specific fandoms anymore. And while auctions and memes and challenges are loads of fun, nothing is quite the same as a gift exchange for the pure anticipation of it.
The Coalition For Disturbing Metaphorshalfshellvenus on October 24th, 2014 08:02 pm (UTC)
I think it's just because whoever did the nominations didn't add the main characters-- maybe because they wanted something else (the Die Hard 4 requesters seemed to want Matt/Lucy fanfic and nothing else), or because they forgot to pick characters?

There's no restriction on how many fics for a given character, just for the fandom as a whole.

Glad you're getting a chance to do an exchange again!

I started reading this, and was like, "Oh, helicopters, this should be ..." Alas, not! Okay, back to my regularly scheduled Friday evening in the back yard. LOL

My husband had noticed them (and a police car or two) while out walking, but I immediately forgot about all that until I noticed I was hearing them... and they didn't seem to be leaving. :O

Well, hopefully nothing too serious/icky.

Just for kicks I followed your link and had one of those WTF moments because I don't have any idea what most of those fandoms are except that they're probably anime...?

Happy Belated Birthday, btw! I've been a rather slack LJer lately and I apologize.

Thanks for the birthday wishes!

It seems as if almost anything can be nominated as a fandom, though some of them puzzle me. Music videos? Commercials? I'd be hard-pressed to get a 1000-word story going for those, though people pull it off every year. :D

I have it on good authority (heliokleia and amodalie are my reliable sources!) that Bastien Schweinsteiger and Lukas Podolski are a very popular RPF slash pairing, if it helps! Although since your daughter is nuts over Bayern maybe stick to gen or het?!!

Good luck! :)

Well, I guess this explains the category, then!

I am not going to write it, but I was surprised to see it listed-- possibly because her love of that team seems to random (well, World Cup aside), and I kind of boggle that anyone else is that interested.

Though Cricket RPF is a category too, so there's that!

My friend Julie is nuts about the German players too; has been for years so it's beginning to look like an epidemic! ;)

Now Cricket RPF! That's my cup of tea, even if it's more obscure than most categories, and my OTP was always Steve Rhodes/Mark Ramprakash. There are so many deep, dark, RPF sekrits! *looks guilty*

Helicopters?
The Coalition For Disturbing Metaphorshalfshellvenus on October 25th, 2014 11:01 pm (UTC)
Yes, that unfortunately turned out to be a manhunt for a fugitive. :(

Sheriff's helicopters, at least, and they were not of the Night Vale kind.

Oh, no, they've found you! (YT: The downfall of criminal masterminds everywhere.)

Thanks for the heads up on signups. I would have missed those. Now I have to sort through my short-list to decide what to request/write....

I can't tell if the cycles are shorter this year, because I often just lurk on the pinch-hit list for Yuletide Madness opportunities, but it seems as if there was a week to nominate and a week to sign up, and that doesn't seem very long to me!

I've been to the Bayern Munich museum at Allianz, so I can totally believe they have a fandom. (Not sure I want to find out what their fic are like, though.)
The Coalition For Disturbing Metaphorshalfshellvenus on October 27th, 2014 05:32 am (UTC)
This would be the soccer team, which (here's a part of soccer I don't understand at all) includes people who are not German, never were, and don't even live there. The Bayern Munich team is a pro club with players from all kinds of places-- including those who play for regular teams as well as the high pro leagues. One of their team members also plays for Aresenault.

So, this would be fictional stories about the layers. It sounds as if plane flights must be a regular way of life for some of them!

(Sorry, my comment was confusing -- that's what I get for typing a comment out on phone instead of near a proper keyboard.)

I know who they are and what they do. FC Bayern Munich weren't home when we visited Allianz Arena near Munich (as part of a private tour), but the stadium itself is huge, and there was a large football-oriented visitors' center with interactive games, trophies, jerseys, and life-sized cardboard stand-ups (and in some cases, statues) of the players from yesteryear and today. They seem pretty athletic. :-p

For nationality, well, I'm assuming it's like pro sports here. In the U.S., we have baseball players from Central/South America, basketball players from China and Africa, hockey players from Eastern Europe, Canada and Russia ... they all play for their home teams during the Olympics, but otherwise play in whatever league gives them the best deal. That makes sense to me.

RPF, on the other hand, I had to look up. That's the bit that unnerved me. ;-)

life-sized cardboard stand-ups
That seems oddly creepy to me, instead of awesome. :D

Understandable. It has a lot of appeal to many people, but there's also 'ook' potential. Though I definitely remember lusting after a couple of the Trailblazers in the day, and running RPF in my head...
