Hit me, baby!
Still hoping for more blather topics to cover for my December Blogotron Meme! See this post, unless what you're really thinking is, "Oh dear God, no!" :D

Temps are dropping around here to the point where I bike in the garage just because I hate the cold (anything below the upper 40s). I have a new mask for my face (which might actually work!), and shoe covers, but... urgh. Going from 50-45, I'd probably give it a try, but going from 62-45? Oh, hell no! Too abrupt. Too cruel!

I've remembered to cover the flowering maple at night, the one I have to replant every year when the frost kills it. Mostly, we don't do much, unless overnight temps are REALLY low. Years ago, we had a solid period of lows around 21o, and put the hoses on drip. Other people wrapped stuff like fiends. Some neighbors down the street managed to wrap their whole hose bib so that it looked like they had a tiny hostage strapped to the house! Secretly awesome. :D

I finished reading The Sisters Brothers, which was captivating despite not being my usually kind of book at all—Gold Rush setting (so, kind of a Western), and hired killers. The narration really pulled me in, though. I started The Girl Who Fell From The Sky yesterday, and am almost finished with Pirate Cinema and More Than This. Plus? A Harry Bosch book on the Kindle. \o/

Since I can't seem to get any of my family members to check out this link, I must foist it off onto you: Why Nikola Tesla was the greatest geek who ever lived. Obviously relevant to my son's interestings and yet.... I do need to see if that science test of his came back, though. ;)

So, my office is cutting out telecommuting and I am semi-despondent. What's new with you?

poor tesla. edison comes across as a giant bag of dicks. i mean, even allowing for how much the oatmeal dislikes him.

how do you know there isn't a tiny hostage wrapped up with your neighbor's hose bib? :D (i'm picturing a despicable me minion covered with the waterproofing that construction companies wrap houses in before putting on the siding.)

the sister brothers looks interesting! and it sounds like you might even recommend it.

Yes he does-- especially the lies and manipulation and appropriation!

Minions! There's no downside to those. :D

The Sisters Brothers WAS interesting, and I would recommend it. Any book grounded in a genre that I dislike that persuades me that well is something I have to recommend. The narrator is the more decent of the two brothers, and often questions whether the two of them should be in their particular line of work. Since his frustrations with his brother are the same as the reader's, you feel you understand him all the more!

:) I loved the page about Tesla (which led me to some of the other great oatmeal links). A lot of the facts were brilliantly shown in the movie "The Prestige" with an equally brilliant David Bowie as Tesla. ♥ Anyway, after reading the whole thing I am nearly inclined to say 'poor Edison' for being crowned as the king of douchebags... ;)

The only thing I really remember about The Prestige any more was Bowie as Tesla-- a great idea, I thought.

I'm starting to think more and more that Edison earned that title. Killing cats and dogs to discredit his rival? That alone is just really dreadful.
