LJ Idol Exhibit B: "Deceptive Ease"
Deceptive Ease
LJ Idol Exhibit B | week 0
Introduce another player (this is whipchick)

~*~*~*~*~

She could tame lions,
and if lions were anger,
irrational thoughts,
or expectations of being ordinary,
then she already has.

The whips are not weapons,
they are anchors
in feats of agility and skill—
props that dazzle
while defining distance
just a hairsbreadth short of harm.

The routines look effortless
but the practice is relentless—
You can do better, keep trying harder,
do it again and again and again
.
Chasing the truth inside words
is the same, the singular product
of both persistence and art.

Do the things you're afraid of,
pursue the dreams that haunt you most.
You can do more, always more,
than remain in the cage you already know.

It is not easy or predictable,
but the best goals never are.

This is how you learn to be fearless,
one hard-won victory at a time.

This is epic.
I wish I could write poetry

Thank you!

Poetry is tough-- I have yet to use it as an official entry in a voting round. :O

I also wish I could write poetry.

This was really good! And actually not hard to follow which always happens to me when I read a poem. :)

Thank you!

Once in awhile, fewer words express an idea more tightly than a lot of words. I'd started off with regular prose on this one, but didn't make it very far. This format worked much better for what I was trying to say.

This is awesome. It's a great description of her, and in a format like what she would do, and it's all great and good and I like it a lot!
The Coalition For Disturbing Metaphorshalfshellvenus on May 8th, 2013 04:48 pm (UTC)
I'm glad it feels true to her. She's so awesome that I was nervous about selling her short!

Thank you! I don't do them often, but once in awhile that's the way something wants to be told.

I was jealous that you claimed her, but I'm glad now that you did. This was well done, and it's true of her, and elegant in its delivery.

I felt bad about that afterwards, since I just picked the first person that came to mind, and there are SO many people I could have written about.

But I'm glad you feel that it does her justice. She's so wonderful in so many different ways, that it's a challenge to try to capture them all. :)

this was lovely. i also am envious of those who can write poetry. i do enjoy magnetic poetry (haha) but it seems to require a different sort of creativity. nice work.

Those last two lines are oh so true. You cannot wait until you feel strong/ready to do something. You have to step out on faith and try what seems impossible.

One of my favorite writers writing about another one of my favorite writers: my expectations are high but you did not disappoint. And in the middle of writing about her, you also taught me something. Great job!

Sometimes strength only comes from taking that hard step. Once you do, you may discover that things look different-- more possible, and the road you're on has already changed toward where you need to go.

I'm glad you saw some of yourself in here, too. This has been both a hard and amazing year for you, with new perspective on your situation and the things you've put in motion to begin a new life. ♥

I read this first thing this morning when I woke up and have been trying all day to articulate a response that doesn't sound horribly conceited! So I'll say, I admire the girl in your poem very much, and I hope I can live up to her.

What I love most about this is a sense of desperation as well as strength - I often receive the comment that I seem really together or focused or strong, and I think many people are unaware of the cat-herding, bootstrapping, skin-of-the-teeth frantic scrabbling that's involved in getting there. I will say, you're right, most of the time, I'm not afraid.

I like that your poem reminds me that lion-taming is, literally, herding cats. I think it's "chasing" that makes me think that.

Printing this one out--thank you.

I think we're always harder on ourselves than other people are, so while you see more of the difficulty and missed steps, others see the drive and the results. It's that you keep pushing against the difficulties that makes all the difference.

I tried to capture here the idea that your accomplishments are not simply talent or byproducts of luck. There is work involved, and your planning and persistence have had a lot to do with what you've accomplished. Talent alone is great, but talent and the willingness to fight for your goals are like a force of nature!

I'm so glad you liked this, and hope in time you'll believe more and more of it is utterly true. :)

Love it! Perfect intro to Whipchick....and jealous you got to introduce her!

Thank you so much!

She was such a great subject-- there was so much more that could be said!

I think you did wonderfully at capturing the spirit of whipchick.

The line that struck me the most was this:
"You can do more, always more,
than remain in the cage you already know."

It feels not just like it's about whipchick, but it's also the sort of wisdom she would dispense to others.

It's so true for many of the choices she's made, but I think all of us have some of that same ability. The first step is to realize that it's possible.

This is just so, so whipchick, from the title down to the very last line. I was really curious as to what approach you were going to take with this, and I think this is a perfect one. Awesome.
The Coalition For Disturbing Metaphorshalfshellvenus on May 10th, 2013 09:37 pm (UTC)
I thought that title really described her, both in her circus work and also in her writing. She makes it look easy, but she practices, works, and has organized master plans.

I'm glad you felt this captured her so well. So much awesomeness in one person, and such an inspiration when you realize that it is so much more than just "magic."
