Is anybody still here?
For those of you going to wincon, which seems like everybody but me, have a great time and know that I'll miss seeing you this year!

We thought briefly about my going anyway, even though Sunday is my birthday (and the kids would not like or understand my being gone then), but it doesn't seem the right choice, family-wise. Looking at the flights, which would involve 9-12 hours of travel and 2-3 plane changes, only confirmed that feeling.

I'm feeling kind of disconnected from fandom anyway these days, with several people potentially unhappy with me or just "meh." That makes it especially hard not to be going. :(

Can't decide whether to do win_non_con, because we'll likely be gone part of Sunday (Apple Hill!). Plus, I'm not sure I'm especially skilled at knowing when to try to adhere to the letter of the task vs. when to go cracktastic on its ass, which is a valuable skill when playing that game!

However, if the idea tempts you, then you should totally sign up! *pimps mightily*

Safe flights and journeys to everyone else. Don't forget meeeeee!

Oh sweetheart, I certainly wish with all my heart that you were coming (although with the notion of 9-12 hours of travel I can definitely see why you can't). ♥

*washes all your "meh" away*

p.s.~ I don't think you need to be around on Sunday to do the Treasure Hunt. Most teams divvy up the assignments first thing and then you go scout them out/make them up on your own time. It's wacky!!

I wish I were too-- this would my chance to meet you, since you're finally going! It's tough knowing everyone else will be having fun without me.

Aha! And you would know, having run it yourself the last two years. That's good to know! :D

Hope you and Barb have a great time, and put in a good word for me. ;)

I'm not going either, for similar reasons. *cries on your shoulder*

Really? I thought you'd have it slightly easier, with Seattle being a major hub and Sacramento... not so much. I could swear that one of the trips I took from Portland to Chicago (when I lived in Illinois) was continuing on to Baltimore. From Sacramento, it's all pieces of evil. :(

Well, we can cry together. I will SO miss seeing everyone and being part of the whole celebration.

I'll bet Seattle's worth it, though, isn't it? Wonderful city. \o/

I'm still here! *waves* Although, admittedly, I've been preoccupied with the simultaneous elections. *cries*

Who could possibly be unhappy with you? You're kind, generous, and wank-free. *is confused*

*hugs you*

Might this cheer you up a smidgen? Yes We Can...

You're so close to the U.S. that it must feel like you're getting bombarded from both sides! I'm just panicking over the McCain/Obama election and then the state Prop 8 initiative (which is to overturn the Supreme Court ruling allowing gay marriages. I don't want that to pass!)

Who could possibly be unhappy with you? You're kind, generous, and wank-free. *is confused*
I try to be, though I get absent-minded/distracted at times, and people might get fed up with that. Mainly it's that feeling when you comment in other people's journals and they don't respond to you at all. Makes you feel like something's going on. :(

I liked the website. I've never understood why people give politicians their babies to hold, but seeing as you rarely get to hold babies other than your own (and they don't last), well whoo-hoo! Any excuse works, especially if you're a man (my husband laments that people don't understand that nearly everyone likes to hold fluffy babies, not just women). :)

Alas, I could not go either, so I am here! I wave to you from my wee corner of the web.

Color me intrigued by win_non_con. Must go check that out :D
The Coalition For Disturbing Metaphorshalfshellvenus on October 15th, 2008 08:27 pm (UTC)
I decided to join win_non_con after all, given Deirdre's note about there not being a strict 1:1 timeline of participation. Which makes sense, since not everyone is on U.S. hours either!

Good to know!
scarlett_oscarlett_o on October 15th, 2008 08:24 pm (UTC)
You will be missed. *hugs* But I'm not sure that the prospect of 9-12 hours of travel through 2-3 airports wouldn't make me decide not to go either. With any luck maybe next year will work out better.
The Coalition For Disturbing Metaphorshalfshellvenus on October 15th, 2008 08:29 pm (UTC)
I hope it'll be over near this coast next year, ideally a 1-flight distance. And not on my birthday!

I'll miss you all, and I'm impressed that you're making the turnaround from moving to wincon. Though I can sure understand it!

Hope everyone has fun, and squeeze Joy and Barb for me!
scarlett_oscarlett_o on October 15th, 2008 08:56 pm (UTC)
I think it should be in Vegas next year, cheap and generally direct flights for one and all. But of course that's just my opinion. ;)

I will squeeze both of them for you specifically. *g*
The Coalition For Disturbing Metaphorshalfshellvenus on October 16th, 2008 02:29 am (UTC)
Much as I hate Vegas, it's at least well-located. I'd push for Seattle, though, just because I'd like to go there (and Barb wouldn't have to get on a plane). ;)

But Vegas is a major hub, and that really helps when it comes to flying!
Eponineponin10 on October 16th, 2008 02:49 am (UTC)
Ooooo... Seattle has BOOKS. *g* Powell's! Heh. Vegas would be a little more centrally located, however.
The Coalition For Disturbing Metaphorshalfshellvenus on October 16th, 2008 06:02 am (UTC)
Wait, does Seattle have a Powell's? I only know the original one in Portland. An entire city block wide, with at least two stories! Love it. :D

Vegas would be a little more centrally located, however.
Definitely true, though I hate that city with a passion. But a little bit inland really helps people coming from across the country. Might take the trip down to 1-2 planes instead of more. :0

I'm not going, and I probably won't go to another one again. I mean, don't get me wrong, it was great bonding with you and the other girls that I've met and have maintained (at least) LJ friendships with... but I'm, by no means, a fangirl in the way that I've seen these go.

These cons have had their purpose in my life, and honestly, right now, other things are just more important.

But I, too, wish a lot of good times for those going!

but I'm, by no means, a fangirl in the way that I've seen these go.
I'm not one to the degree of some of the people I met there (for instance, some of them had the dialogue from the episodes memorized!), but I really enjoyed meeting and being with all of you. It's mainly that I won't get to see you all in person again that's bothering me!

These cons have had their purpose in my life, and honestly, right now, other things are just more important.
I do have secret thoughts about things like Comic-Con (which apparently is "Every Show On TV-Con"), especially after having the boys there and the Chuck cast there. But I imagine those are expensive and perhaps slightly insane. :0
Queen of Music: spn_jaredsmile2dove95 on October 25th, 2008 06:20 pm (UTC)
Yeah, I think Comic-Con would be absolutely crazy!

My mind might be changed to go to WinCon next year, especially when I hear it might be in Denver. I do miss meeting the few new people that I got a long with (like you!), so we'll see :)

it's a total bummer that you can't go, but if it took me nine hours i wouldn't go either. yikes. at least next year it should be closer to your side of the country.
The Coalition For Disturbing Metaphorshalfshellvenus on October 16th, 2008 02:26 am (UTC)
I hope you have a great time, and I'm sorry I won't be seeing you again in person this time around.

Oh, I fervently hope there's enough fandom to warrant a Wincon next year, and that it will be closer!

Have fun! :D

Dude, seriously. I feel like either half of my flist has defriended me or are just politely floating on my friends page. Very odd feeling compared to my PB days.

I still adore you!

It's not so much defriending (at least, I'm not aware of that!) but of posts I comment on where I get no response, or people kind of passing over my posts. Which may be altogether boring these days, who knows. But it feels kind of distancing.

I so miss the early PB days-- now I'm out of the fandom altogether, and my f-list has all these nice people still squeeing over the show while for me it's not even happening.

I adore you too! And your inappropriate lust after old, dead, white men who were geniuses with a pen. :D

I wonder if most fandoms I've had contact with are just restless? SPNTA is apparently overrun with wank, to the point where it alienates original fans. I still don't think fandom has recovered from the writers' strike--too much time without the shows, and arguably worse content and writing for the trouble.

PB doesn't even make my top ten of favorite shows, but it solidly number one as my favorite fandom. It just felt intimate and supportive; now everything I like feels so big that I cannot even find a niche in which to hang, or I'm just plain ten years too late (oh Oz, what I would give to experience you in real time).

I'll be honest--I'm surprised PB is still on. I'm not saying this out of bitterness, I'm just truly shocked. I'm kinda tempted to watch the later seasons through netflix, but I can't imagine that will end well.

Oh, how I do adore my literary-lovers. :sigh:

I know what you mean-- even now, what's left of it on LiveJournal is still of a relatively manageable size. I miss that, and the relatively low wank factor compared to other fandoms.

Oh, me too. The first season was fantastic, and the second kind of sucky other than a few great secondary roles (Kellerman! Mahone!). Why didn't the show die after that? They spent an entire season of their desperate escape farting around in the U.S. in a really rambly-scrambly way, and it all felt so directionless. I'm surprised the ratings were good enough for a Season Three.

And this year, well... bringing headless characters back to life was pretty much the end-all for me. Thank goodness, too-- from the little I glimpsed of the first two S4 episodes, they were back to that random flailing around from S2. No thanks. :(

*hugs* I'm still here for the moment. I'm going to bed soon, though, so I can get up in time to finish packing. I've got the jewelry packed, but not my clothes. *g* Still, I will miss hanging out and chatting with you this year.

Happy birthday in advance!
